The Smile You Hide

Writen By: Harrison/Rice

This song was originally written for a band called Predator with Kev Rice (now with Projekt) but the band split up before the song was finished. Dean finished it "between bands" and it provided another song to get the first Headstrong set up and running quickly. The inspiration for the title was a "Athena" type photo poster entitled "Lizzies Smile" which had a picture of a beautiful woman with her smile "hidden" behind her hand. Originally inteded as a filler until other songs were written it stayed in the set until it was replaced by Too Good for Loving when Head First was released. It was also the first song to make extensive use of keyboards. The version on Days of Darkness was recorded at The Rocket, Basford on 18th September 1990.

You want your lovers but you don't want the skies
You want your freedom but you don't want the ties
You crave affection but you don't want to ride
Your smile's perfection but you keep it inside

All your encounters with men turn to dismay
They love then knock you around
Each morning noon and night you get down and pray
To find a hole in the ground

You want a lover don't run away
Till you discover the better way
You need a lover then run to me
I'll break inside the smile you hide

I've been mistreated too so listen to me
I know your secrets and fears
I've got the magic touch to set your smile free
From where it's hidden for years

You want a lover don't run away
Till you discover the better way
You need a lover then run to me
I'll break inside the smile you hide

Deep inside

So now you see that things aren't always so bad
We've swept aside the prophets of doom
To see you smile again it makes me so glad
To see your presence cut through the gloom

You want a lover don't run away
Till you discover the better way
You need a lover then run to me
I'll break inside the smile you hide

Deep inside
