Days of Darkness Writen By: Gilbert/Harrison/Morley/Saxton/Timms |
Days of Darkness became the title track of the debut studio sessions for the band. Headstrong soon developed 2 styles of song, short snappy verse chorus songs and Epics which generally told a story from start to finish. Days of Darkness was one of the first of these epics. Probably the song with more words per second than any other song, when written Days of Darkness was a resonably paced song lasting around 5 and a half minutes. By the time it reached the studio it was down to 4 minutes 10 without a single note or word being dropped. As a consequence there were many gigs at which Dean bit his tongue trying to fit all the words in
Many years ago in the days of old, when the streets of the
city were paved with gold
An unsuspecting trader introduced the pest, flea ridden vermin in a linen
chest
It wasn't taken serious just a cold in the head, but too many people ended
up dead
It started with a fever as temperatures rise, souls taking to the skys
You can't hear it... It doesn't make a sound
You can't see it... But you know it's around
Run, run for your life, the plague is coming to this town
Run, run for your life, it's going to bring the Empire down
Ring a ring of roses was the talk of the town, a few little
sneezes and they all fell down
People start to panic, run to the hills, all they did was spread their ills
The priests pray for a healer to arrive, while victims still are left alive
The miracle is dying and lies are told, as men die with their gold
You can't hear it... It doesn't make a sound
You can't see it... But you know it's around
Run, run for your life, the plague is coming to this town
Run, run for your life, it's going to bring the Empire down
Down, Down, Down
Days of darkness are all around
Friends and loved ones in the ground
Hope for tomorrow, hope for today
Hope for the children who laugh and play
The church bells chime bring out your dead
Burn your clothes, burn your bed
Paint a red cross on your door
Visitors won't come here no more
No-one can come here, no-one can leave
Villages live in a state of seige
Strangers aren't welcome, the roads are closed
The graveyards fill up row upon row
The town is silent a ghostly plane
Those that survive go insane
For days of darkness there is no cure
Not for the holy, not for the pure
Run, run for your life, the plague is coming to this town
Run, run for your life, it's going to bring the Empire down
Salvation came at last in a ball of fire
Took the death toll even higher
It started in a baker's on Pudding Lane
Careless smoulder, lethal flame
The killer is vanquished the town is clear
Lifted a cloud of deathly fear
The days of darkness are no more
But are you really sure
You can't hear it... It doesn't make a sound
You can't see it... But you know it's around
Run, run for your life, the plague is coming to this town
Run, run for your life, it's going to bring the Empire down
