Out in the Cold Writen By: Gilbert/Harrison/Morley/Saxton/Timms |
Despite being able to swim like a brick
and being terrified of water, Dean has had a long standing obsession
with the Titanic. In 1981 he was convinced he wanted to write a song about
it and spent hours in the library researching and writing the words you see
below. Neither he, nor the band he was in at the time had the songwriting
skills to turn this into a working song so the lyrics were stored away, only
to be dusted off 8 years later when Headstrong had the skills to complete
the task. The lyrics here are virtually as they were written in 1981, with
one verse dropped for timing. Despite the research there is a definite inaccuracy
in the words "Her proud bow pointing to the sky" when in
fact the ship went down bow first, though strangely nobody has ever pointed
this out to the band. There was also a hilarious typo on the original sleeve
of the Days of Darkness demo, as the printers managed to miss the word
"hundred" out of the first line of the song, completely altering
the context of the entire story.
The obsession with the Titanic was also shared by Dean's close friend
Joanne Gregory, who was also a loyal Headstrong fan, travelling as
far as Wales to see the play. Tragically she died of cancer at the age of
27 in 1999. This song is now forever dedicated to her memory.
Twenty two hundred people on a never ending ride
Laughing cheering waving as their life begins to slide
She was a White Star liner of forty six thousand tons
They'll never ever sink her, she'll never take the plunge
Midday on the tenth of April the year was nineteen twelve
She sailed out of Southampton water to the Great Atlantic Shelf
Cherburg, Queenstown then to New York, the weather was cold but fine
Eight hundred miles of frozen water they'd meet in their own time
A lament for nineteen twelve
They'd been left to die, on that cold Atlantic shelf
Out in the cold, they'd been left out in the cold
Left out there to shake and shiver
Their safety'd been sold right down the river
They'd been left out in the cold
Midnight came on the fifteenth day of April
The ship was stopped by a sickening crash with ice
The stokers down below, didn't stand a chance
Their odds they had been stacked with loaded dice
Out in the cold, they'd been left out in the cold
Left out there to shake and shiver
Their safety'd been sold right down the river
They'd been left out in the cold
Up on the decks, it was women and children first
The whole affair was full of calm
But they all laughed when they heard the hull had burst
They didn't think they'd come to harm
A lament for nineteen twelve
They'd been left to die, on that cold Atlantic shelf
The band still carried bravely on, the lights still burning bright
Her proud bow pointing to the sky, the air was thick with fright
Then down she went to Davey Jones now too late to panic
And all because of one proud boast, they'll never sink the Titanic
A lament for nineteen twelve
They'd been left to die, on that cold Atlantic shelf
Out in the cold, they'd been left out in the cold
Left out there to shake and shiver
Their safety'd been sold right down the river
They'd been left out in the cold
